Staff Profile:Dr Albert Elduque Busquets

Researcher on AHRC/FAPESP-funded project 'Towards an Intermedial History of Brazilian Cinema: Exploring Intermediality as a Historiographic Method' (short title: IntermIdia)

Deputy Director of the Centre for Film Aesthetics and Cultures.

Areas of Interest:

My current research is focused in Brazilian film, particularly in the relation between Brazilian music traditions and their cinematic staging and translation. This work is based on an intermedial approach to contemporary music biopics and documentaries, to analyse certain intersections between both arts. Apart from this, and following my PhD thesis From Hunger to Vomit: Images of Consumption in Modern Cinema, I'm also interested in European and Latin American political cinema from the 1960s and 70s.

I've done research on filmmakers such as Werner Herzog, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Marco Ferreri, Glauber Rocha, Joaquim Pedro de Andrade and Jorge Silva and Martha Rodríguez and I'm currently working on the analysis of contemporary Brazilian music documentaries such as Cartola - Música para os Olhos, O Mistério do Samba and Tropicália. As an output of my postdoc research, I have also curated the 'Contemporary Music Film Season' in the Reading Film Theatre, showcasing ten films from the last fifteen years that were complemented with a course for the Reading community.
