Sarah’s research focused on child trafficking in Africa, a subject she is deeply passionate about due to its social and humanitarian implications. The documentary she produced during her research was selected for seven film festivals, an encouraging milestone early in her career. She is now exploring distribution opportunities to expand its reach and impact.
“The course significantly deepened my understanding of how film festivals and programming operate. This knowledge has been invaluable in my current role as an international jury member. It gave me both theoretical insight and practical awareness of the festival ecosystem.”
Building skills and confidence
Sarah credits the programme with strengthening her communication skills and broadening her critical thinking. It also reinforced the importance of building and sustaining professional relationships within the creative industries.
Although establishing a career in the UK film sector as an international graduate can be challenging, she remains determined and optimistic.
By attending industry events and actively supporting other filmmakers, she began building meaningful professional relationships. Through this process, she developed a strong connection with the founder of the British Urban Film Festival, which led to her current invitation to serve as an international jury member. “It has been a wonderful and rewarding experience so far,” she says.
Advice for future students
For those considering the programme, Sarah encourages clarity and self-reflection.
“Before starting the programme, clearly define what you want to achieve. Ask yourself: Why am I here?”
She also offers this valuable reminder for prospective students:
“Do not compare yourself to others. You are unique, and your journey will be different. You can create a film school-like experience for yourself by choosing the right modules and actively engaging in practical opportunities.”
For Sarah, her time at Reading provided more than academic knowledge. It offered the insight, resilience, and industry understanding that continue to shape her evolving career in film.
