Aims of the course

How does grammar really work? Why do people have certain attitudes to different accents of English? How can we describe the social and linguistic features of discourse? How did world English develop and how is it changing? This course will address these questions, and more.

The sessions are intended for teachers who feel they would like to learn more about Linguistic and Applied Linguistic topics to inform their teaching of English Language.

Course content

The following topics will be covered:

 

  • Accents and dialects: features and attitudes
  • Child language acquisition
  • Conversation and discourse analysis
  • Global Englishes
  • Grammar: Word and Clause level analysis
  • Language and gender
  • Language and new media

Course elements will run for a morning or an afternoon session.

 

Registration will be allowed for individual topics; i.e., participants can sign up for elements which interest them, or for any combination of the three days.

 

Morning sessions begin at 9.30am, with registration from 9am, and afternoon sessions begin at 1.30pm, with registration from 1pm.

Costs

The course costs are as follows:


Each morning/afternoon session = £45

An entire day = £80


Lunch is included on the day(s) that you are attending.

Application deadline

Please note that places will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. Numbers for each topic will be capped at 20 participants.

Cancellation

Participants must inform us in writing if they wish to withdraw from any part of the course. It may not be possible to return any fee in full.
