Manual Handling Risk Assessments

INTRODUCTION:

The course aims to provide information and advice for staff carrying out manual handling risk assessments, not only for lifting and carrying operations, but also for repetitive tasks as well as working with machinery where bodily force is required. Injuries caused by manual handling operations are responsible for a significant number of accidents and lost time in the workplace.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE SESSION:

• Be able to complete a manual handling risk assessment using the University format
• Understand how injuries are caused and the factors affecting injury

ON RETURNING TO THE WORK PLACE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO:

• Be able to complete a suitable manual handling risk assessment for your area
• Be able to apply control measures which will reduce the risk of injury

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:

Newly appointed staff who carry out manual handling risk assessments. The course is also applicable for staff such as Health & Safety Co-ordinators who need to have an overview of the procedures. It is also appropriate as refresher training for staff who attended training more than 3 years ago.

PRE-COURSE PREPARATION:

Attendees should establish with their manager, Health & Safety Co-ordinator or previous manual handling assessor what manual handling risk assessments and records exist for their area. Details of outstanding manual handling problems or issues should be brought to the training session for discussion.
