First Aid and Medical Assistance
If you encounter a student, colleague, or member of the public who is injured or unwell on campus, follow the guidance below.
In an emergency
If the person has a serious injury or medical condition requiring urgent assistance:
- Call 999 and request an ambulance
- Contact Security on extension 6300 (or 0118 378 6300) and inform them of the incident
Be prepared to provide:
-
The nature of the injury or illness
-
The casualty's condition
-
Your exact location (building, floor, room number, etc.)
Where possible, arrange for someone to direct Security or ambulance personnel to the scene.
If the situation is not an emergency
Contact a First Aider. Designated First Aiders are available in every campus building during core business hours.
You can find details of local First Aiders, together with QR codes for the defibrillator map and the incident, accident and near-miss reporting form, on safety posters displayed throughout University buildings.
Alternatively, contact Security on extension 6300 (or 0118 378 6300) and request:
-
A First Aider, or
-
The location of the nearest defibrillator.
Security will direct you to the appropriate resource and arrange assistance where required.
While waiting for help
Remain with the casualty where possible, provide reassurance, and monitor their condition until assistance arrives.
