Introduction to Laser Safety

INTRODUCTION:

The aim of the course is to give a brief description of lasers, their classification; the health and safety risks they present to users, and how to assess those risks. University procedures for controlling the risks will be described, and the procedures in place for ensuring all work with lasers is properly supervised.

AIM:

To introduce new users to working safely with lasers.

OBJECTIVES ON RETURNING TO THE WORK PLACE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO:

• The nature of the hazards presented by lasers
• Non-beam hazards associated with certain types of laser
• The University procedures for controlling the risks

COURSE CONTENT:

• Lasers: fundamentals of operation; types and their classification;
• Risks from lasers: optical risks; risks to skin
• Associated risks: electrical; chemical; physical, etc.
• Risk assessment procedures
• University procedures: registration of lasers; registration of users; School Laser Supervisor (SLS) and University Laser Safety Officer.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:

All new and prospective laser users; any new SLS, or SLS who has not attended in the last 5 years.

New / prospective laser users should bring along details of their laser application(s) to assist in tailoring the presentation to the needs of the group.
