The National Centre for Biotechnology Education (NCBE) is part of the University of Reading. Our mission is to inspire the next generation of scientists by promoting hands-on, practical science in schools and colleges. We believe that engaging students through interactive experiments fosters a deeper understanding and lasting enthusiasm for science, encouraging them to pursue further study and careers in STEM fields.

What we do

We achieve our mission through two key areas of focus:

Supplying practical science kits and resources

We support educators around the world by providing high-quality, easy-to-use scientific kits and classroom resources. These kits are designed to align with Key Stage 4 and 5 curricula. They cover a wide range of topics in biology and biotechnology, including:

  • gel electrophoresis kits – featuring our award-winning NCBE gel tanks, ideal for classroom use
  • dried restriction enzymes – a stable and accessible way to demonstrate how restriction enzymes function
  • plant science kits – including the cauliflower cloning kit and photosynthesis kit to bring plant biology to life
  • bacterial transformation kits – a robust and user-friendly resource for teaching genetic engineering techniques
  • synthetic biology kits – designed for more advanced teaching in genetic engineering
  • NCBE microbial fuel cell – enabling students to generate electricity using bacteria or yeast, linking biology with renewable energy
  • a range of high-quality enzymes
  • a range of microbial slope cultures.

All our resources are designed to make complex scientific concepts engaging, accessible, and classroom-friendly.

Science outreach and engagement

The NCBE is deeply committed to science outreach. We run a dedicated outreach programme that sends University of Reading students into schools and colleges to deliver hands-on practical activities. These visits provide students with real insights into:

  • life at university
  • studying science degrees
  • career opportunities in science.

In addition to school visits, we host on-campus events centred around interactive, practical experiences. These events are designed to enhance student understanding and engagement with science.
