Building Access & Security Guidelines

SCFP spans five buildings at the University. To ensure the safety of staff, students, and materials, access is restricted. The following information will help you gain appropriate access to the areas you'll be visiting or working in.

Access Hours:

  • Students: Monday–Friday, 08:00–18:00
  • Staff: Monday–Friday, 07:00–19:30

For evening/weekend access, please refer to the instructions below.


Security Reminders:

  • Always carry your Campus Card—it enables access and serves as ID.
  • Don’t allow tailgating. If someone follows you through a door, ask them to swipe in.
  • Be prepared to show your Campus Card if asked—this helps maintain security.
  • Report any concerns to Security at 0118 378 6300.

Campus Card access

Chemistry/Pharmacy Building (W006) and Harry Nursten Building (W047) 

  • Undergraduate and MSc (Taught) students - access should be automatic after enrolment on your course. If you encounter problems, please contact the Student Support Centre.
  • PhD and MSc (Research) students - formal access will be granted following your Safety Briefing - if you are unable to attend the pre-arranged session temporary access may be granted on request.
  • Staff - formal access will be granted following your Safety Briefing - if you are unable to attend the pre-arranged session temporary access may be granted on request.

Hopkins Building (W118 - Pharmacy)

  • Formal access will be granted following your Safety Briefing. 

JJT Building (W003 - Pharmacy)

  • Formal access will be granted following your Safety Briefing  

CAF Users (W006 - Ground floor: NMR, Thermal, Optical; W006 - Basement: X-Ray; W003: CfAM; W031: Mass Spectrometry)

  • Access is only granted following completion of local training and competency in operation of equipment.
  • Please contact the designated representative for the area you require.

Visitors

Academic visitors (Non-UoR - SCFP) - access will be granted following your Safety Briefing. Out of Hours access is not permitted.

University of Reading Staff (e.g. HR, Legal, Contracts) - access to be formally requested by a member of SCFP staff or Head of School. Please liaise with the person you will be visiting. Out of Hours access is not permitted.

Stores

Non-SCFP staff/PhD students who require regular access to the stores located in Building W006 (Chemistry/Pharmacy) can request access via stores staff.

Out of hours access

SCFP

Due to the potentially hazardous nature of work within SCFP, access is restricted to authorised personnel only.

  • SCFP Staff and PhD students -  formal access is granted following completion of the H&S Safety Briefing.
  • Non-SCFP staff and PhD students - access card to be requested by academic lead/supervisor, formal access is then granted following completion of the H&S Safety Briefing.
     

Extended access hours are a privilege and failure to follow local procedures may result in access removal.

  • 1st offence: Verbal warning to lab user and Supervisor/Line Manager notification. Reminder of correct procedures.
  • 2nd offence: Written warning and Head of Department notification. Reminder of correct procedures, and that a third offence will result in a laboratory access suspension and the mandatory requirement to refresh all H&S training, to restore laboratory access.
  • 3rd offence: Laboratory access will be suspended until the mandatory completion of all Health & Safety training. Access will be reinstated only after successful completion of this training

CAF

  • SCFP staff and PhD students - CAF access will be upgraded (or downgraded) inline with School profile.
  • Non-SCFP staff and PhD students - Access is granted on a case by case basis. Authorisation provided by the Director of CAF.

To obtain a key for your office or laboratory, please contact the Building Support Officers for Zone 2 and Zone 3.
