We are involved in a range of outreach activities with the aim of promoting, enhancing and enriching mathematics and statistics in schools.

We are keen to develop close relationships with students and teachers in secondary schools and colleges, and can provide support in a number of ways.

STEMNET

A number of staff in the Department, and scientists working locally, are STEMNET Ambassadors. They support teachers to demonstrate how Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects relate to the world of work. They show pupils how mathematics can be applied across a vast range of careers.

Departmental events for schools

We run two departmental events for school groups and individuals, Magnificent Maths Day and our two-day Summer School, where we run exciting sessions that aim to bring mathematics to life.

Previous sessions we have run as part of these events have included: Cops and Robbers on Graphs, Polymer Maths, From Crime Scene to Court, Forecast Factory, To Infinity and Beyond ...?, and Infectious Disease.

We also engage with students via online tasters such as webinars and Channel Talent talks.

Students in Schools

Students in Schools enables students to volunteer to work alongside teachers in local schools. The programme's aim is to raise the aspirations of school pupils and encourage them to continue in higher education.

Further Maths support

The South East Further Mathematics Support Programme (FMSP) is an initiative making Further Maths available to all pupils in the south east of England. Our Department is a member of the FMSP and hosts and contributes to study days.

More information for school teachers

The University's Student Recruitment and Outreach team organise and run a range of outreach activities on and off campus to raise the aspiration and ability of young people. These include events promoting higher education and career opportunities.
