Areas of interest

Current role:

I support the Nation of Refuge Project Investigator and researchers to deliver a cutting-edge, impactful 4-year research programme. I am working with the team to:

  • Develop a Theory of Change with clear vision, objectives and impact measures.
  • Analyse and map stakeholders to support a strategic approach to stakeholder engagement and communication.
  • Support the team in developing positive, long-term relationships with stakeholders.
  • Schedule internal and external meetings and follow-up with actions and deadlines.
  • Create and maintain the Nation of Refuge webpage.
  • Provide general administrative assistance to the team.

Working in the Department of Languages and Culture is a great opportunity to get a taste for academic life, learn about other research methodologies and further develop my skills on impact measurement.

Research interests:

My main areas of research interest are within HR and people management, including: employee health and wellbeing; equality, diversity and inclusion; flexible and hybrid working.
I’m passionate about research dissemination - promoting positive organisation and policy change through cutting-edge insight. I enjoy seeking out opportunities for the research team to engage externally at conferences, with the media and with policy makers. I am keen to further pursue my interest in measuring the real-world contribution to knowledge and impact of rigorous academic research.

Research projects

  • Nation of Refuge (Administrative Assistant)
  • Open University: Addressing the motherhood penalty at work (Research Associate)

Background

My background is in research and public policy roles, within the fields of HR, people management and equalities. I led on high-profile, mixed methods research projects at the CIPD (Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development) to improve work and working lives.
A significant part of my previous roles was drawing out practical insight for employers, policy makers and officials. I bridged the gap between academia and practice.
I disseminated research insight for practical application through writing research reports, policy consultation responses, conference chairing and speaking, speaking on podcasts and webinars, leading workshops, and providing comment to national and trade press.
I am now enjoying a portfolio career, including:

  • working at Reading University on the Nation of Refuge project
  • working part-time at Open University to develop further impact for the ‘Catching the Mumentum’ project’s practical toolkits which address the motherhood penalty at work
  • undertaking freelance short-term research projects such as case studies, content writing and literature reviews

Academic qualifications

  • PhD in Management, University of Reading, 2008
  • MSc in International Business, University of Reading, 2003
  • BSc in Psychology, University of Wales, Bangor, 2001
