Re-examination fees

For modules first taken in 2020/1 or later, if you have an overall result of 'failed' or 'not qualified' and you have been permitted a further attempt at re-assessment this year, the charges below will apply.

  Undergraduate

• Re-assessment for undergraduate programmes/modules: £5 per credit, up to a maximum fee of £325 (i.e. students resitting more than 65 credits will be charged the maximum fee). Please note resit fees are charged at a module level, not submodular, and therefore students are liable for the fee for the whole module, even if a students is only being reassessed in one submodular element.
• Re-examination in Teaching Practice in the Institute of Education (module codes ED3SX1, ED3PGG, ED3PGI, ED3PGST, ED3PTGP, ED3PTIP, ED3PTSP, ED3PTGS, ED3PTIS, ED3PTSS): £630.

Taught postgraduate

• Re-assessment for taught postgraduate programmes/modules: £5 per credit, up to a maximum fee of £325 (i.e. students resitting more than 65 credits will be charged the maximum fee). Please note resit fees are charged at a module level, not submodular, and therefore students are liable for the fee for the whole module, even if a students is only being reassessed in one submodular element.
• Re-examination Teaching Practice in the Institute of Education (module codes ED3SX1, ED3PGG, ED3PGI, ED3PGST, ED3PTGP, ED3PTIP, ED3PTSP, ED3PTGS, ED3PTIS, ED3PTSS): £630.

Due to differences in the programme fee structure, re-examination fees are not payable in respect of Greenlands-based programmes.

Further Information

The Exams Team will contact you if you are eligible for re-assessment. The cost of resitting each module will be stated clearly and you will need to indicate your intention to resit and then pay the relevant fee. We will provide you with instructions for the different ways you can pay. If you later change your mind, you must notify us in writing at least three weeks before the exam period begins, otherwise you will remain liable for the full fee.

Please note the following:

• the charges per credit are applicable for all types of re-assessment, including written examinations, coursework assignments, practicals and in-class tests;
• if you are not registered on an undergraduate or taught postgraduate programme, but are resitting an undergraduate or taught postgraduate module, you will be liable for the relevant fee as stated above;
• the maximum fee applies per examination or assessment period, not per year;
• if you have an overall result of 'passed' you will not be eligible to resit any failed modules.

Other examination fees

• Administration fee for sitting exams overseas in exceptional circumstances: £220 (plus local invigilation costs and normal reassessment fee).
• Administration fee for external candidates taking written exams at Reading: £130 for the exam; £65 for each additional exam in the same exam period.
