AI Literacy for Teaching and Learning
Three self-paced online modules for University of Reading colleagues who teach, support learning or lead education.
Developed by Jisc and tailored to the University of Reading, the series explores how to decide when generative AI can support learning, how to check its outputs and when another approach would work better. Across the modules, you will consider your students’ needs, your discipline and the University’s policy and guidance.
How the modules work
Allow about one hour per module. You have unlimited access and can revisit the materials. We recommend completing one module at a time, starting with Module 1 and working through to Module 3, but you can take them in any order.

Module 1: Understanding AI
Explore AI fundamentals, try prompting and practise evaluating outputs. Consider students’ experiences and choices, and the environmental impact of AI use.
Module 2: Applied AI Skills
Explore ways to create and adapt teaching materials, improve accessibility and support learning. Practise judging whether an AI-generated resource meets your students’ needs.
Module 3: Ethical and Responsible Use of AI
Examine bias, data protection, copyright and academic integrity. Use the University of Reading's assessment guidance to consider how to explain appropriate AI use to students.
Read the modules alongside the University of Reading’s policies and guidance on AI in teaching, learning and assessment.
