Teaching and Learning at Reading
We are delighted to have you here to teach, support and inspire our students. This page signposts you to key sources of information for your role in teaching and supporting learning at the University. Please also refer to the T&L Information Hub . If you are a new member of staff, you can use these resources alongside key information given to your during your central university induction and your local induction. We also recommend booking on UoR Learn to attend the ‘New to T&L at Reading’ session.
Our Approach to Teaching and Learning
Teaching and Learning is overseen by our Pro-Vice Chancellors for Education and Student Experience: Professor Elizabeth McCrum and Professor Peter Miskell.
Our Teaching and Learning Framework provides an overview of the key messages and areas of focus for the coming year(s). The current Framework is specifically for 2022/23 and 2023/24.
The university’s T&L Portfolio is currently being reviewed in the Portfolio Review Pathway initiative. The outcomes of this work will be implemented in Autumn 2024. See Portfolio Review Pathway for more information.
We are committed to providing an inclusive learning experience for all our students and are working hard to reduce the awarding gap. Key information about our inclusive approach can be found on the Inclusive T&L at Reading web pages.
Our approach to learning, teaching and assessment is guided by our Curriculum Framework. The Framework offers a set of Programme Principles which guide the design and delivery of modules and programmes. Embedded in the Framework are our four Graduate Attributes: mastery of the discipline, skills in research and enquiry, personal effectiveness, and a global and future-facing outlook.
T&L Support: Centre for Quality, Support & Development
The Centre for Quality, Support and Development (CQSD) is here to support you through your journey at the University of Reading. It has three teams: Academic Development & Enhancement (ADE), Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL), and Quality Assurance and Policy (QAP).
We deliver Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses open to all staff involved in teaching and supporting learning, and an accredited programme in Academic Practice. We provide best practice guidance on teaching, learning and assessment including digitally enabled learning as well as bespoke support for schools and departments across the University.
You can request to sign up to our regular mailing list to hear about new T&L CPD opportunities as part of our T&L Programme, which you can book through UoRLearn.

Our commitment to Teaching Excellence
The University regards the highest quality of teaching as a key component of the student experience, and is committed to ensuring that all staff involved in teaching and learning are appropriately supported.
The FLAIR Framework provides three strands to professional recognition for teaching & supporting learning: a pathway for doctoral researchers, the Academic Practice Programme (APP) for staff relatively new to teaching in HE and a non-taught CPD Route for experienced staff.
Our T&L Awards and recognition schemes offer a range of ways to further develop your practice and reward your commitment to teaching and enhancing your students' experience'
