Background
Since joining the University of Reading, my career path has followed four distinct phases. Initially, I focused on teaching and learning, progressing to the course directorship of the MSc Project Management (1992–2003).
Thereafter, I prioritised research and was successful in securing significant amounts of external research funding. Research leadership roles included School Director of Research and the Directorship of the EPSRC-funded Innovative Construction Research Centre (ICRC) (2001–2011).
The third phase of my academic career commenced with my appointment as Head of School (2010–2017). As Head of School, I oversaw a period of significant expansion and diversification which included the development and launch of the Reading School of Architecture. I further prioritised a strategic investment programme in energy and environmental engineering.
In 2017, I stepped down from the role of Head of School to reconnect with my research interests and to prioritise international activities. In this fourth phase of my career I am focusing once again on the publication of research outputs. I am frequently invited to serve on international research evaluation panels, and to advise on issues relating to research assessment.
I also continue to be actively involved in consultancy with industry both in the UK and internationally.
