Areas of interest

My research addresses the overarching area of Energy use and Indoor Environments, focusing largely on People and Building Interactions. The latter describes how people effect the performance of buildings through their interactions with the building services and passive architectural elements, but also how buildings affect the comfort, health and productivity of people inside buildings.


My research involves gathering empirical data on people and building interactions in both domestic and non-domestic buildings to produce data-driven, stochastic occupant behavioural models (e.g. heating, ventilation, lighting and shading behaviours). The occupant behaviour models can be used as alternative inputs to building design tools (building performance simulation) and for human-centric operation of building management systems with the goal of achieving higher quality indoor environments with reduced energy consumption.


More widely, my research addresses digital tools for energy efficiency, overheating, retrofit of existing buildings, indoor air quality, low energy building design and the gap between predicted and actual performance of buildings.
