Our programme will help you get more from your degree programme at Reading, by improving your academic language and communication skills while you study.

The Academic English Programme (AEP) is free to all fee-paying international/ EU students and has four strands:


Academic English Programme Blackboard Hub

Self-enrol on our Academic English Programme Blackboard Hub to sign up for Academic Language Webinars and Spoken Language Courses and to receive updates about what AEP is offering during the year. To enrol on the Hub, follow the instructions below:

  • Open this webpage that you are currently looking at in two tabs
  • In the first tab, sign into Blackboard
  • In the second tab, open the Hub Blackboard and follow the self-enrolment instruction

If you have problems self-enrolling on the Hub, please contact Academic English Programme at or attend one of our 'Ask the AEP Team' sessions.


Any Questions?

Our ‘Ask the AEP Team’ sessions run every Monday-Friday during term time and offer 10-minute individual or small group (up to 3 people) sessions with one of our Academic English tutors. You do not need to book, simply come along to get advice about Academic English or to ask about our programme. Typical questions for these sessions might be:

  • Can you give me some quick tips on how to improve my academic vocabulary?
  • I would like to improve my grammar. Which AEP course could I take?
  • I am having problems enrolling on an AEP course. Can you help me please?

Who can attend the Academic English Programme?

Courses and consultations on the programme are:

  • free to any fee-paying international or EU student
  • open to undergraduate and postgraduate students
  • available at any stage of your studies at Reading.

Online courses for self-enrolment

We have a range of online academic grammar, writing and presentation courses designed for independent learning, with the option to attend weekly live online sessions.


Academic Language Webinars

We run a large series of one-hour webinars designed to help you with the language needed in a range of academic communication contexts.


Consultations for writing and presentations

If you would like individual advice and feedback about your academic writing or speaking, you can meet our experienced academic language tutors on a one-to-one basis.


Live spoken language courses

We offer face-to-face spoken language courses to help you develop your confidence, fluency and accuracy when speaking.


Discipline-specific AEP

We work with many of the academic departments at Reading to provide subject-specific modules and workshops. Please check with your own Department to find out if this is an option for you.


Academic Language and Literacy Liaison

Each department at Reading has a dedicated Academic Language and Literacy Liaison contact from ISLI's Academic English Programme (AEP).
