Genetic Modification - A course for researchers

AIM:

To enable those involved with Genetic Modification (GM) activities to understand the relevant legal requirements, and to explain the procedures the University has put in place to comply with those legal requirements.

OBJECTIVES ON RETURNING TO THE WORK PLACE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO:

• Understand the terms used in genetic modification work
• Know the legal and University requirements for GM work
• Know the duties of GM workers; and
• To know the duties of Supervisors of GM projects

COURSE CONTENT:

• Brief overview of GM legislation; definitions used including that of "GMO";
• Application to micro-organisms and higher organisms;
• Need for risk assessment, notification and other duties on Supervisors
• University procedures for approval of all GM activities and workers involved
• Procedures for worker approval (and health surveillance, where appropriate)
• Undertaking GM work: local rules; maintaining inventory of GMOs; inactivation and disposal methods.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:

All new and prospective GM workers should attend before starting GM work.
