Focus on healthy relationships

This month, with Valentine’s Day around the corner, we’re focusing on the power of healthy relationships.

While February often highlights romantic love, it’s important to remember that relationships come in many forms—friendships, family connections, and even the relationship you have with yourself. Here’s some resources that could give you some perspective on different relationships:

  • The UoR Student blog has lots of advice from fellow students on topics like making friends, having a good relationship with your housemates or staying connected whilst away from home.
  • The University’s Consent Matters training programme has information about the importance of consent so as a community we all build a shared understanding of what consent is, how to respect boundaries and how to positively intervene in a situation as an active bystander
  • How to recognise signs of domestic abuse and where to get help
  • What is self-esteem and how to improve it?

Want to learn more about relationships? Why not borrow a book from the Library’s Wellbeing Collection in the Quiet Study Area on the Ground Floor, which covers a range of topics from relationship, through mindfulness to dealing with anxiety.

Upcoming events on campus

A great way to boost your wellbeing is by strengthening your social connections and making new friends. Easier said than done? Our advice is to start small. Maybe join a student society or come along to a Student Life Event on campus.

Events are also a fantastic way to make new friends or try something new! Here’s a few highlights of what’s coming up:

  • Friday, 28 February, 14.00-16:00 - Friday Get-together at London Road, Studio in the Museum of English Rural Life. Take time to socialise and do something completely different from your studies at the end of the week to help you relax and unwind before the weekend.Snacks, drinks, games and crafts provided. All welcome!
  • LGBTQ+ History Month Events - 1 February – 28 February is LGBT+ History Month. Join us for a month of events, workshops and talks across the University and within our wider local community.
  • Weekly Wellbeing Events - check out the summary of wellbeing events taking place every week during semester 2, so you can get your daily dose of feel good.
  • Are you an international student? Join Global Study Lounge & International Student Mailing List to hear about what is happening in the Global Study Lounge and about the trips and events being run for international students

Opportunities

Enhance your university life by taking some extracurricular opportunities. Our Opportunities Timeline may help you find ones most suitable for you, whether you’re UG or PG student.

If you’re looking to be more engaged with the University, here are a couple of opportunities especially for UoR students:

Become a StaR Mentor

Would you like to share your student experience and help others? Apply to be a STaR mentor and help a new student settle into their university life.

IDEAFEST

Do you have a business idea? Why not enter the IDEAFEST competition? The competition allows you to present your business idea and gain support that could lead to the idea being commercialised.

Student Union Leadership Elections

Want to shape the future of your SU? Elections are here! Have you seen what we do at the SU and been intrigued by the idea of getting involved? Or even thought you could do things differently? Now's your chance!

Here’s how it works: Take a look at the positions available. You can take a year out of your studies to be a paid, full-time officer, or apply for a part-time, volunteer role that you can fit around your studies. After applying, you can campaign for your spot. It then goes to an all-student vote to decide who leads next year!

Explore Careers in Science, Health & Environment

Join the Science, Health, and Environment Fair to connect with employers, explore career paths, and discover internships and graduate opportunities. Get insider tips and ask your career questions face-to-face.

Manage your money

A student on the phone. Illustrations of clocks in the background.Money worries can make even the best experience feel miserable. One of the best ways to prevent that is to create a budget, so that you can spend your money wisely. It’s especially important now, when the prices of many products and services continue to rise. We’ve created a special Cost of Living Guide for University of Reading students - from warm spaces on campus, to free laptop loan service, it’s all there.

Want more money advice? Then look out for the National Student Money Week events, opportunities, and content (24 February – 28 February). And if you need a more personalised approach, remember you can always contact the Student Financial Support Team.
