The Department of English Literature engages in internationally recognised and world-leading research across the historical spectrum.

We have three departmental research areas - 'Identities', 'Archives and Materialities' and 'Creativity,' and within these areas, we have distinctive strengths in Book and Publishing Studies, Early Modern Literature, Poetry and Poetics, Samuel Beckett Studies, Children's Literature and Ethnic Studies.

Our research sits within the University's Heritage and Creativity research theme.
