Areas of interest
My research interests lie in Pharmacy Education, in particular and the use of technology, interprofessional education, and the experiences of international students studying at Reading School of Pharmacy.
Background
Since qualifying as a pharmacist in 1995, I have worked in hospital pharmacy, including 4 years in a London teaching NHS trust and 3 years at the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford, where I specialised in neurosurgery, neuro-intensive care and geratology. At the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading I had a number of roles including Lead Pharmacist for General Surgery, Lead Pharmacist for Head & Neck Surgery (including Ear, Nose and Throat, and Ophthalmology), and Gynaecology.
Over my 20 year career in the NHS I was involved with teaching nurses, doctors and junior pharmacists and was a pre-registration pharmacist tutor for 8 years, tutoring individual trainees and taking part in delivery of the Thames Valley Regional Programme for Pre-Registration Pharmacists.
I joined Reading School of Pharmacy in the Autumn of 2005 as a part time Teacher Practitioner and have been involved in the development and delivery of pharmacy programmes ever since. During this time I introduced Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) and Interprofessional Education (IPE) activities to the School's range of innovative teaching, learning and assessment methods.
In 2007 I was involved in writing several chapters of a textbook, "Foundation in Pharmacy Practice", along with 4 of my colleagues; the book was published in June 2008 and is one of the core text books for the first year of the Pharmacy Practice course.
In 2008 I became a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and in 2017 I achieved Senior Fellow status. In the same year I became a University of Reading Teaching Fellow, and completed my Master of Education degree with the Open University.
In 2015 I became a full time lecturer in Pharmacy and was seconded to the University of Reading's Malaysian campus to join the Pharmacy section there, fulfilling a number of roles including MPharm 2+2 Programme Lead and Admissions Tutor. In 2017 I became the Head of Section, leading a team of 8 academic staff. My secondment ended in 2019 and I returned to the UK campus to become Programme Director of a new international MSc in Clinical Pharmacy Practice.
