Children in the LRC
Updated May 2026
Children visiting the Learning Resource Centre (LRC) must be accompanied and supervised by a responsible adult at all times, including whilst using shared facilities and public areas.
The accompanying adult is fully responsible for the child’s safety, behaviour, and compliance with all LRC regulations during their visit. LRC staff are neither authorised nor permitted to supervise children on behalf of users.
All LRC policies and regulations apply equally to children accompanying visitors or users of the LRC. Failure to comply with these regulations may result in individuals being asked to leave the premises.
Children Under School Age
Children below school age are permitted within designated public areas of the LRC when accompanied by a responsible adult.
Whilst accompanied by a young child, users may:
- Borrow, renew, or return library materials
- Seek assistance at the Information Desk

For safety, security, and study environment reasons, access to certain study and collection areas may be restricted.
This may include:
- Quiet Study areas
- Silent Study areas
- Group Study Rooms
- Special or restricted collections
- Course Collection areas
Where necessary, LRC staff may assist users in retrieving requested materials during staffed service hours.

School-age children and young visitors may enter the LRC only when accompanied by a responsible adult and must behave in a manner appropriate to a shared academic environment.
Children and young visitors must not:
- Cause disruption to other users
- Disturb study environments
- Misuse LRC facilities or equipment
- Enter restricted study areas unless permitted
Access restrictions may apply to designated silent or specialist study areas.
Safety and Conduct
To help maintain a safe, respectful, and suitable learning environment for all users, the LRC reserves the right to:
- Refuse access to restricted areas
- Request that disruptive behaviour cease immediately
- Ask individuals to leave the premises where behaviour is considered inappropriate or unsafe
The University and LRC accept no responsibility for children left unattended within LRC facilities.
