Mustafa studied MA in International Security Studies at Reading to enhance his understanding of contemporary global security issues and learn to analyse them critically.

Until the fall of Afghanistan to the Taliban in August 2021, he worked as the Director General of Regional and International Affairs Commission at the High Council for National Reconciliation of Afghanistan.

“The key mandate of the Regional and International Affairs Commission (RIAC) was to build and strengthen regional and international consensus, as well as promote further cooperation and coordination among Afghanistan’s regional and international partners in support of the Afghan peace process. I lead all the secretariat affairs including setting agenda, arranging the meetings, making talking points, providing advice and executing the meeting decisions in collaboration with different stakeholders including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of State for Peace of the Afghan government.”

Freedom of choice

The overall context of the programme was an excellent opportunity for Mustafa to develop his knowledge, skill and gain new experiences. He was free to choose from a variety of modules within the school and address his academic and professional needs.

“The optional Parliamentary Studies module helped me improve my knowledge on British politics and understand how the parliament works in the UK. This course enhanced my political knowledge with a global perspective. In addition, the study trip to the Westminster was a unique opportunity to get first-hand experience of the British parliament.”

Set yourself apart

Mustafa’s time at Reading had a positive impact on his career development.

“All aspects of my time at Reading including the teaching sessions, study trips, assignments and volunteer activities and discussions with visiting speakers from the world of politics were impactful. Moreover, the international character of Reading helped me to build professional relationships and expand my network. Politics and IR at Reading is an excellent choice to anyone wanting to become a diplomat, political analyst or a public servant.”
