This lecture looks at the prevalence of obesity in our society and explains how it is measured. The lecturer looks at some of the illnesses which obesity can lead to. She compares men and women in terms of degrees of obesity, and indicates the seriousness of the problem which has tripled in the last 30 years. The lecture concludes by exploring some of the causes of obesity and examines how the situation can be addressed, looking at the energy balance equation, and the genes associated with obesity.
