No, it is not possible for ill students to sit in an exam room by themselves, an invigilator must always be present in the room with you and therefore you would risk making the invigilator sick if this was allowed. You would also still be using the same facilities as other students, so the risk of spreading an illness would still be present.
If you are sick and likely to be contagious to others we ask that you not attend your exam. View the The Day Before and On the Day of the Exam page
If you are too sick to attend your exam, you can submit a Post results Assessment Adjustment form following the publication of results, for any exams you were not able to sit. You will need to provide proof of the illness for this to be considered.
If required, you will then be able to take the exam in the next resit assessment period.
Please also contact your Student Support Coordinator to make them aware that you are unwell and will be missing the exam.
Yes, temporary accommodation is available to book via the Stay at Reading webpage.

Yes, students can still sit their exam without their student ID card. If you have another form of ID on you, such as a driver's licence or Passport, please place this on your desk instead of your ID card.
If you do not have any other form of ID card on you, you can still sit your exam, however you will need to complete a Confirmation of Identity form during the exam. An invigilator in your exam room will provide you with this form if required.
You will be sat in a different seat for each exam you take, therefore your seat number will not be available to you until the day of your exam. You can locate your seat number via the seating list present outside of each exam venue.
To find your seat number, firstly find the exam module you are taking and then look for your name alphabetically by surname under this.
If you do not have a bag or coat to leave non-permitted items in and you cannot leave these in a friend’s bag, please give your items to the invigilator within your exam room, as you enter. The invigilator will hold these for you at the front of the room until the end of the exam.
Not having a bag is not an excuse to keep non-permitted items on you and you will be subject to Academic Misconduct, if you sit an exam with a non-permitted item on you or around your desk/chair.
See permitted and non-permitted items for more information on what you are and are not allowed to have on you during your exam.
If you leave your campus card or any other property in the exam venue, providing this is found by the invigilators, this will initially be held in a secure location either in the exam venue or with The Examinations office. If the lost item is not collected promptly, it will be transferred to the Palmer Building reception, as per the University's standard Lost Property policy.
If you realise you are missing any property, please contact The Examinations office as soon as possible and they will be able to advise you if the item has been found and if so, where to go to collect this. Please note that any property brought to the exam venues is done so at your own risk.
It is important to make sure that you do not have any non-permitted items on you during the exam, such as a mobile phone or ear buds. It is also important to make sure you do not have any items on you which could conceal hidden notes, such as a wallet or card holder.
If you need to go to the toilet during the exam, you will be asked to check your pockets before you are permitted entry to the bathroom, so you must make sure these are empty before you start your exam.
Once your exam has started, students found with non-permitted items in their pockets, or items which could conceal non-permitted items, will be subject to Academic Misconduct.
See Permitted and non-permitted items for further information.
No, where an exams instructions state that a University provided calculator is permitted, you are not allowed to use your own calculator, even if this is the same model. This is to ensure the integrity of the exam is maintained and that we can be sure that students are using an approved calculator.
If your exam is one which uses a University provided calculator, a calculator will be laid out on your exam desk for you, prior to your arrival. It is your responsibility to ensure you are familiar with the model and can use its functions, invigilators are not able to assist you with this.
The academic tutor for the exam should be able to give you this information well ahead of the exams period. If you do not know how to contact your tutor, your Student Support Coordinator can help you with this.
It is your responsibility to know what items you need to bring with you to an exam. If you are permitted to bring your own calculator to an exam and you forget this, choose not to bring one, or bring a non-permitted model, then you may have to sit the exam without the use of a calculator.
Please see Calculators and Dictionaries for more information.
