Why study at Reading?
Studying Chemistry at Reading is a unique and supported experience, with opportunities for you to study internationally, gain hands-on-experience in state-of-the-art facilities and participate in world-class research.
Life in Chemistry
Our undergraduate students are an integral part of our department, contributing to the learning partnership as well as our research. Before you even arrive on campus, we will set you up with a personal team of mentors and tutors who will make your transition to university life as smooth as possible and support you during your degree.
"The Department has a really nice feel to it. I immediately got the sense that I could be part of the community, but, more importantly, that I could contribute to it."
We have an active social programme throughout the year, which starts with Welcome Week. We recognise the importance of social time. This is when you will build the supportive relationships that last long after you graduate.
Our undergraduate students run a very active Chemical Society - ChemSoc - for all members of the department. The Society organises events throughout the year, from pub crawls to career fairs.
A supportive environment with an individual experience
Before you arrive at Reading, you are allocated a student mentor who will help you settle into university life. You are also assigned a support tutor to aid you during your first year of study and a personal tutor who is available throughout your degree programme to offer advice about your studies.
"To start with, a personal tutor is more there for the pastoral side of things. But then in my fourth and final year, my personal tutor became a lot more involved in where I wanted to go career-wise. She was really helpful in guiding me, and asking me the questions which shored me the way. The door is always open, and that's really nice and reassuring to know."
"Before I started at the University of Reading, I was nervous about what might lie ahead. Right from the very beginning of my first year I felt supported by my tutor, my mentor and the members of staff in my department."
Excellence in teaching
Our department keeps strong links with industry to ensure our degree programmes offer what employers want. Our teaching staff includes University and National Teaching Fellows who keep us at the forefront of teaching practice.
