Department of Chemistry

We are working together to make life better for everyone through our world-class research, and we are inspiring others to do the same through our award-winning teaching.

Fundamental to the everyday, far from the ordinary

We are a community that is excited about chemistry. Our award-winning, nationally-recognised staff bring this passion to their teaching by delivering content that is at the forefront of knowledge, informed by our own research. As a student, you are part of this community. We involve you in our research, work alongside you in our state-of-the-art Chemical Analysis Facility, and support you in gaining skills and hands-on experience that will help you in the future, regardless of your career path.

Undergraduate programmes

The content of our programmes is shaped by our research as well as by industry advisers. This helps us deliver cutting-edge information with real-world relevance. We also support our students in developing professional skills, making our graduates highly employable. Last year, 100% of our graduates were in work or study within six months (Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education survey (DLHE), 2016-17).

Postgraduate programmes

We have a thriving postgraduate community working on novel and on-going projects across all of our research themes. Our postgraduates benefit from our state-of-the-art facilities as well as training opportunities designed to develop skills that are highly-valued by employers.

Our research

Our research spans the full breadth of modern chemistry and is organised into three research themes: Biomedical, Molecular and Analytical Chemistry,  Materials and Interfaces for the Future, and Soft Matter. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework assessment (REF 2014), 94% of our research outputs were recognised as Internationally Excellent or World-Leading.

Outreach and working with schools

We know how important it is to inspire the next generation of chemists. Working closely with schools, we help engage students of all ages with chemistry and support teachers in the delivery and enrichment of their curriculum.
