Senior Technician - Teaching & Research

I am the Senior Technician in the Microbiology Technical Team based in the Knight Building, I work part time. We prepare the SBS microbiology undergraduate practicals. In autumn term I demonstrate in the Introductory Microbiology module and have previously demonstrated in the Building Blocks of Life module, for which I am lead technician. In spring term I support and demonstrate in the Bacteriology and Virology practicals. We maintain two microbiology teaching laboratories and all the equipment associated with them.

The other part of my role is indirect research support, supporting the activities of academics and PhD students working within the research labs. As a laboratory coordinator this involves health and safety checks, advising on waste disposal, topping up cell storage dewers with liquid nitrogen, inductions for new lab members, media preparation and ordering of shared consumables. I am lab coordinator for the research group working in environmental microbiology as this is my area of interest.

As senior technician I set our agenda and chair our weekly technical team meeting. I also participate in our journal club.

I have professional registration with the Science Council and have been running a CPD meeting to facilitate other technicians to share what CPD activities they have been doing to aid each others development.

I have a BSc in Environmental Science from Portsmouth University and have worked at the University of Reading since 2012, spending 4 years in with the National Centre for Biotechnology Education before moving to Microbiology.
