Study BA Primary Education with Mathematics Specialism (QTS) and discover how you can champion mathematics within primary education and build pupils' confidence as mathematicians.

This course will enable you to get a job as a primary school teacher following graduation. There is a high demand for specialist primary school teachers and many of our graduates go on to become subject leaders. Furthermore, we are ranked 9th in the UK for Education (The Guardian University Guide 2023).

You will divide your time between studying modules on professional skills and curriculum subjects, and developing your knowledge of mathematics. The former will introduce you to the core National Curriculum subjects, including Information and Communications Technology (ICT). You will develop skills essential to the role of a teacher, including leadership, classroom management, and evaluation and assessment. You can then put these skills into practice through professional placements, which take place throughout the course.

Additionally you will study professional legal requirements, and investigate the role of the teacher and how children develop. In mathematics you will study both pure and applied aspects, and build on your knowledge each year.

Maths needs champions within primary education, and you will develop the knowledge, skills, understanding and attitudes that will aid you in this. This includes topics such as building students' confidence as independent mathematicians, and international perspectives on the teaching and learning of mathematics.

Finally, there is a key component within the Mathematics Specialism for you to develop leadership skills in order to lead mathematics in primary schools.

Placement

You will have the opportunity to carry out placements throughout this course. These will take place within local schools that the Institute of Education has active relationships with. Whilst there you will be mentored by a teacher and linked to a University tutor, who will provide you with additional support. 

During your first year you will attend a weekly placement, which will familiarise you with the daily routine of the classroom and link in with your professional modules. For example, you may have to complete an observation for an assignment. You will also complete a block placement during each year of the course. 

You will spend four weeks in a Key Stage 1 (KS1) setting during your first year, seven weeks in a KS2 setting in the second year, and an eight-week placement in a Key Stage of your choice during the final year.

Climate and sustainability education

At the University of Reading we believe that climate and sustainability education is everyone’s responsibility. This is why we have set out our vision that all initial teacher trainees should be able to access training that empowers them to effectively incorporate climate education within their teaching across all levels and subjects as part of our National Climate Education Action Plan.

  • what is happening to our climate, how to help children learn about climate and sustainability in an age-appropriate and accessible way, and how to develop your own positioning as a teacher

Entry requirements A Level BBB

This degree is not included in our firm choice scheme.

A levels 

BBB including Mathematics or related subject (Use of Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Statistics and Economics). 

As part of the application process for this programme, you will be required to attend an interview.

International Baccalaureate

30 points overall including 5 in Maths at higher level 

GCSE

GCSE Grade C (4) or equivalent in English, Maths and a Science

BTEC Extended Diploma

Only accepted when taken alongside an additional accepted level 3 Mathematics qualification (e.g. an A Level in Mathematics) 

Other information

It is an ongoing requirement for all teacher training students to have a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check to ensure they are able to work with children and/or vulnerable adults. If you are offered a place on the BA (QTS) course and you accept that offer, you will need to undertake this process. There is a charge for the DBS check, which is set by the Disclosure Service.

You will be required to undertake a criminal record and occupational health check. You will also need to demonstrate competence in Fundamental English and mathematics by the end of the course. This is a new DfE requirement which replaces the QTS skills tests in literacy and numeracy. Information can be found on the Department for Education website.

Candidates must spend at least 5 days before the start of the course gaining recent and relevant experience in a state primary school in the UK. They must also have an A level grade B or 5 IB points in a subject related to maths, as well as a GCSE grade C or equivalent in English, Maths and a science. A face-to-face interview is an essential part of the application process.

If you are an international or EU student and do not meet the requirements for direct entry to your chosen degree you can join the University of Reading’s International Foundation Programme. Successful completion of this 1 year programme guarantees you a place on your chosen undergraduate degree. English language requirements start as low as IELTS 4.5 depending on progression degree and start date.

Mathematics, Children and Education 1

Summary:

This module will primarily explore theoretical concepts of key figures in the field of children’s mathematical development, including, but not limited to, Piaget, Vygotstky, Bruner and Skemp. Students will also be expected to independently research and share the works of non-White-male figures. Moreover, the module will explore key features of effective mathematical learning environment, including the use of mathematical story picture books, structured and unstructured manipulatives as well as examine outdoor mathematics learning and teaching activities.

Title:

English and Communication in the Primary Curriculum 1

Summary:

This compulsory module follows national requirements and introduces students to the teaching and learning of English in the primary school. The module develops students’ subject knowledge, which includes pedagogical and curricular understanding in both areas.

The module is designed to emphasise parallels between the two curricular areas. It includes the role of talk in learning, the teaching of early reading (including systematic synthetic phonics) and early writing.

The module is underpinned by the idea of developing Reading and Writing Teachers (teachers who read/write, and readers/writers who teach). Students reflect on their own experiences as readers/writers and the impact these experiences may have on their classroom practice. The use of children’s literature in teaching and learning in the primary classroom is embedded throughout this module.

Mathematics in the Primary School

This module is designed to introduce students to the teaching and learning of mathematics in the primary school. Throughout the module there is a focus on building students’ own mathematical subject knowledge alongside their pedagogical and curricular understanding. The module takes as its starting point the importance of talking about and enjoying mathematics in order to be able to teach it effectively.It will explore the development of number and calculation in detail. Key elements of the mathematics teacher’s repertoire, such as questioning, using errors and misconceptions to inform teaching, and assessment for learning, will be examined, together with the vital role of using and applying mathematics.

Professional Studies 1

Summary:

This module is concerned with the development of trainees as members of a profession as they work towards the standards for QTS. The stages of child development are explored and trainees relate this to teaching pedagogy, building their skills for planning standalone lessons Learning theory is also taught and researched. Trainees develop strategies for managing behaviour and facilitating learning. The concept of ‘being a professional’ is discussed as trainees consider the responsibilities presented to teachers and the accountability that goes with the role. Later in the module, the wider role of the teacher in taking responsibility for children’s wellbeing and personal development is also covered. The role of the trainee as a reflective practitioner underpins the whole module as trainees are required to critically review their own and others’ practice.

This module builds on previous work by exploring English within the primary curriculum. It will cover current policy developments so that students become familiar with statutory and non-statutory documentation.

The module focuses on developing young people’s language and communication skills. The role of children’s literature continues to underpin work.

Title:

Enabling Progress in Mathematics and Science

Summary:

This module is designed to develop trainees’ understanding of the pedagogy and practice of teaching of science, mathematics and ICT/CS education and digital literacy.

The module builds on the content of related modules undertaken in the first year of the BA Ed programme. It teaches the principles of how children learn in science and mathematics as well as in ICT/CS by developing an understanding of the value of providing children with opportunities for practical experiences, problem solving, reasoning and enquiry in order to enable progression. The focus will be on how to construct child-centred, meaningful contexts that engage children’s interest and curiosity.

Students will be given an overview of progression from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 2 in both concept development and scientific enquiry skills. In mathematics the data handling cycle will be explored in depth. The role of ICT within the teaching and learning of mathematics will be developed. In ICT/CS trainees’ programming skills will develop further as well as their understanding and skills of the role of data handling in the revised ICT/CS curriculum.

The module will develop students’ planning, teaching and assessment skills in mathematics, science, ICT/CS and cross-curricular work.

Title:

The Foundation Subjects in the Primary Curriculum

Summary:

This module is designed to develop students’ understanding of the pedagogy and practice of teaching of the National Curriculum Foundation subjects and furnishing trainees with a suite of knowledge, skills and teaching strategies germane to the generalist primary classroom practitioner.

The module will outline the expectations for the teaching of History, Geography, Art, Music, PE, RE, Design & Technology and Foreign Languages. The importance of these to the primary curriculum and children’s development will be examined and related to work undertake in Professional Studies. 

Students will be given an overview of progression from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 2 in the different curriculum areas and guided towards a range of resources and teaching and assessment strategies relevant to the teaching of each. They will be encouraged to consider the possibilities of cross-curricular, thematic curriculum design.

Title:

Professional Studies 2

Summary:

This module builds on ED1PS1 as the trainees continue their journey towards QTS. They become skilled at planning for progression across sequences of lessons and learn how to craft a creative and innovative curriculum experience, drawing on the National Curriculum and beyond. The effect of social, religious, cultural or linguistic influences is acknowledged and strategies for working with children with diverse needs are identified. Assessment is established as key to effective learning and is embedded in trainees’ practice as they work towards more independence in their teaching. Ways of using assessment thoughtfully to create a positive classroom learning culture are also discussed. Trainees explore their legal responsibilities, including safeguarding, and their continuing behaviour management training links in with this and the role that trauma plays. As in the first Professional Studies module, the role of the trainee as a reflective practitioner underpins all work undertaken as each trainee analyses progress thus far and considers areas for personal research.

Summary:

This module deepens and consolidates students’ understanding of the nature, purpose and leadership of mathematics in the primary school. During this module, students will establish key skills underpinning the role of the subject leader, including working with others, monitoring and evaluation. They will refine their understanding of key issues for teaching and learning mathematics and consider implications for a school mathematics policy. The role of working with parents will make up part of the module. Title:

Refining Pedagogy in English and Mathematics

Summary:

This module builds upon previous modules and is designed to enhance and consolidate students’ understanding of English and mathematics and their core role within the primary curriculum. The themes of inclusion and intervention underpin this module, setting children’s particular needs in the context of English and mathematics teaching. Within English, the module extends students’ understanding of what it means to be a reader and writer in the 21st century and implications for the classroom. The module also builds on previous work on systematic synthetic phonics with a focus on tracking and assessment. Within mathematics, the aims of the National Curriculum (Problem solving, reasoning and fluency) will be consolidated and students will have a holistic understanding of how they can plan for a range of pupils in primary classrooms.  The ideas of inclusion, including a clear understanding of meeting the learning needs of pupils with English as an Additional Language will be a focus throughout the module.Students will explore teaching and learning of measures and consider how to build home-school links in mathematics.

Title:

Professional Studies and Inclusion

Summary:

This double module will build on and extend the knowledge, understanding and skills gained in Professional Studies and School Experiences in Years 1 and 2. In particular, it will develop trainees’ experience and expertise in the area of Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) and inclusive teaching, including the relevant legislative framework and the range of specialist advisory services. The module will consider the needs of pupils with specific learning difficulties (e.g. autistic spectrum conditions, dyslexia, speech, language and communication difficulties, and physical/neurological disabilities). Trainees will also develop their behaviour management skills, including the managing of children with challenging emotional needs. They will investigate wider professional communication such as that with parents and support staff. A key aspect to this module will be the opportunity to do a research project in an area of teaching and learning that interests the trainee, with the support of a dedicated supervisor.

Summary:

The module will be examining ways that assessment can take place in science and physical education.  It aims to build on your prior knowledge and provide you with practical assessment techniques, which are often applicable in the wider curriculum. These techniques will be taught alongside continuing development of subject knowledge, and we will look in further depth at inclusion and differentiation to refine your pedagogic practice in preparation for school experience.  Building and reflecting upon your professional practice is therefore key in this module.

Subject Specialism 3: Mathematics- Inclusion, diversity and intervention

Summary:

This module will focus on inclusion issues faced within mathematics education. It will seek to define the nature of inclusion, how groups are defined and models of intervention programmes in primary schools. National intervention programme such as Every Child Counts will be drawn upon to explore the impact of intervention programmes at a national level and how this translates to a local level. They will explore the use of a range of technology to support mathematics teaching and learning, critically evaluating its strengths and disadvantages.

School Experience 3

Summary:

This is the third of three school experience modules. It provides students with the opportunity to build on Year 1 and 2 placement learning and to establish themselves fully in the role of a class teacher so that they are able to meet the Teachers’ Standards at a high level. ED3PI1, Professional Studies and Inclusion, is a co-requisite as it prepares students for the placement throughout the autumn term, and, in the summer term, builds on the learning  to inform transition to Early Career Teacher status.

New UK/Republic of Ireland students: £9,250*

Careers

As a graduate of this course you will be able to work as a teacher or teaching assistant in a primary school, or move into nursery education. We will provide you with careers advice throughout the course, and can also give support when preparing for interviews.

Overall, 98% of our students are in work or further study 15 months after finishing their course [1]
