Summary module description:

This module develops students’ clinical competencies further to enable them to attain the competencies for graduate level entry to the speech and language therapy profession and to prepare students for employment.  


Aims:

Thus module aims for students to independently manage clients with speech, language, communication and swallowing disorders across the life span in a safe, holistic and culturally appropriate manner demonstrating achievement of clinical competencies required for entry to the profession; to develop skills in clinical reasoning and critical evaluation to enable flexible reflective practice with ability to identify and determine own CPD. To develop leadership, resilience and time management skills to commence their first post effectively. The module aims to provide students with an understanding of the changing knowledge base and modes of delivery in the context of social care, health and education. 


Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of the module the students will be able to:




  1. Synthesise current knowledge, skills and practice to produce individualised assessment and management plans for clients across the lifespan

  2. Critically evaluate evidence-based management of clients with speech, language, communication and swallowing disorders 

  3. Evidence appropriate clinical and professional competencies adhering to RCSLT standards and HCPC standards of proficiency and CPE

  4. Evidence flexible and critically reflective practice and awareness own CPD 

  5. Demonstrate professional written and spoken communication


Additional outcomes:

To produce personal development plan as preparation for first post.


Outline content:

Clinical practice: the students will have the opportunity to engage in a variety of clinical practice opportunities (simulation, clinical reasoning and clinical placement(s)),targeted), targeted to their clinical profile and will be increasingly responsible for independently assessing, diagnosing and treating a range of clients with communication/swallowing impairments disorders with support from their practice educators. Average hours will vary across terms. Students will attend sessions in the University Clinic for advanced clinical practice.



Lectures: To develop leadership, resilience and time/caseload management skills. Students critically consider current issues within professional practice for Speech and Language Therapy within hHealth and eEducation contexts in preparation for professional life. Clinical reasoning and critical reflective practice are addressed throughout. Careers preparation for first post is addressed. 



Seminars and tutorials: students attend group and individual tutorials which give the opportunity to reflect on and refine their skills in problem solving and clinical decision making across the lifespan. In addition they attend interprofessional learning session.


Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

The module comprises a varied approach to teaching and learning, utilising, seminars, small group teaching, online resources, clinical placements, advanced clinical practice seminars with a focus on case based learning.



In relation to the contact hours table: Placement hours will total 225 and may be split across two terms or completed in one term depending on placement(s) attended and student need.

Summative assessment- Examinations:

Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:

Placement report (15%) graded by supervising clinicians in placements across Autumn and Spring, Portfolio assessment (45%) submitted Summer term, Clinical Exam (40%) in Summer term. The examination for this module will require a narrowly defined time window and is likely to be held in a dedicated exam venue.


Formative assessment methods:

Group work and specialist practical clinics will offer the opportunity to practise skills and knowledge examined by summative methods. 


Penalties for late submission:

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

  • where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.

Assessment requirements for a pass:

A mark of 50% in the module (with all assessments submitted, and passed at 50% and a pass in each clinical placement). 


Reassessment arrangements:

Case report to be resubmitted and clinical exams retaken by September.



If a clinical placement is failed, then a further placement report to be passed.
