Summary module description:

This module enables students to take part in practicum / industrial training. 



This module is delivered at University of Reading Malaysia. UoRM Lead is Putri Nurain Shazana Megat Nadzruddin Feisal (p.megatnadzruddinfeisal@reading.edu.my)


Aims:

The aim of this module is to provide students with the opportunity to gain valuable work experience, building on previous experience gained through other placement-related and employment-related modules in the programme.  It will allow students the opportunity to explore future career opportunities and network with professionals in their chosen field. 


Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of this module, students will be able to: 




  • Assess their professional skills and competencies and identify areas of development. 

  • Formulate strategies to enable them to achieve their career goals. 

  • Evaluate the role of psychology in the workplace, with reference to previously learned material, including professional ethics. 

  • Effectively reflect on communication, problem-solving, leadership and teamwork during the organisation and execution of practicum duties.

  • Practical applications of psychological theory and research 

  • Apply multiple perspectives and levels of explanation to understand behaviour 

  • Integrate material from different fields of psychology and cognate areas 

  • Search for information, using suitable sources, about a specific topic 


Outline content:

The module only applies to students registered with the Malaysia branch campus. This module comprises interactive lectures and tutorials, as well as a work placement of 300 hours in a field related to students' career choice. 


Global context:

This module will consider the global context of the research and its approaches, with an aim to improve students’ understanding of how behaviour can be context-bound.  


Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

The module contains a substantial work placement, which students will identify and carry out for themselves, with support. The module therefore strongly encourages self-directed learning in relation to work based skills. Support will be given through tutorials.

This module is assessed through completion of practicum / industrial training hours and coursework. 



Students will complete a total of 300 hours of practicum / industrial training (pass/fail).  



Students will also complete a video-based oral presentation about the practicum (100%). 


Formative assessment methods:

Students will have the opportunity to receive feedback on their performances from their respective supervisors during their practicum / industrial training. 


Penalties for late submission:

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

  • where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

You are strongly advised to ensure that coursework is submitted by the relevant deadline. You should note that it is advisable to submit work in an unfinished state rather than to fail to submit any work.

Assessment requirements for a pass:

Students must complete the required 300 hours for this module. 



Students registered at the Malaysia branch campus are required to undertake a total of 480 hours of industrial training / practicum / placement / internship, in order to graduate. This is a programme standards requirement set by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency. 


Reassessment arrangements:

Reassessment is an oral presentation covering their placement.  All students must fulfil the required 300 hours in placement.
