Summary module description:

This module covers key issues and topics in Health Psychology.


Aims:

The aim of this module is to enable students to study selected topics in Health Psychology in depth.  They will develop knowledge and understanding of current research in each topic, and will develop skills in analysis and independent study.


Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of the module, students will be able to:




  1. Understand and evaluate key concepts to understand health and illness behaviours.

  2. Synthesise and evaluate evidence investigating these key concepts.

  3. Synthesis different approaches to explaining specific health behaviours.


Additional outcomes:

Students will gain experience of working in small groups and contributing to large group discussions.  The module will offer the opportunity for students to develop their academic skills including critical and analytical thinking, synthesis, and application of theory.  It will also offer students the opportunity to develop broader skills, including presentation skills, reading proficiency and time management. 


Outline content:

The module comprises 7 2-hour seminars. Via mini-lectures, individual and small group work, and large group discussion, this module will explore key topics within Health Psychology. The module is topic based, with relevant theories/concepts being described, applied and critically evaluated.


Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

A blended-learning approach is taken, with online learning materials and in-person seminars.  Students are expected to undertake pre-seminar reading and activities. Seminars are highly interactive and comprise mini-lectures, individual and small group work, and large group discussions.

Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:

Coursework will comprise a pre-recorded oral presentation using PowerPoint (100%). 


Formative assessment methods:

Formative assessment activities are in bedded in every seminar.  Depending on the activity, they require working individually, in pairs/small groups or as a whole group. 



Mid-module, students submit two draft PowerPoint slides (with audio) and group feedback is provided.


Penalties for late submission:

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

  • where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
  • where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.

Assessment requirements for a pass:
A mark of 40% overall

Reassessment arrangements:

Reassessment is by re-examination of the oral presentation in August/September.
