Summary module description:

This module provides the students with an understanding of key concepts in academic research and writing, including objectivity, critical analysis, the scientific method, and recognised good practice for developing and testing models and frameworks. This supports both the assignments for their individual modules and, particularly, their research `dissertation’ and `project’ modules. This module also provides advice on specific research methods and criteria for the choice of research methods. 

Aims:

To strengthen students’ ability to make best use of the learning opportunities during the MSc degree course. To provide students with an understanding of what is required to perform well in essays, dissertations, report writing and examinations at Henley Business School. To provide students with an awareness of the appropriate use of methodology, theory, data, literature reviews and original research in a Masters dissertation/project. 

Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of the module you should be able to: assemble a literature review on a given topic which provides a synthesis and critical analysis of the relevant literature; produce a well crafted essay as part of module assessment and examinations; understand the main methodological questions concerning research in management and the social sciences; appreciate the different main approaches towards the integration of theory into a research project; assess the suitability and usefulness of alternative sources of data for the analysis of research questions; compose a research proposal outlining a research project suitable for a Masters level dissertation; produce an original dissertation, which critically analyses a particular research question and examines this question using appropriate data and methodology.

Lectures, seminars, and workshops covering essay and exam skills, learning styles, specific research methods, and the M.Sc. dissertation and project.

Autumn term lectures take place on campus.

Spring term classes and computer practicals are pre-recorded and made available to students via the Blackboard page over the term.

The Support Centres will apply the following penalties for work submitted late:

• where the piece of work is submitted after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): 10% of the total marks available for that piece of work will be deducted from the mark for each working day (or part thereof) following the deadline up to a total of five working days;
• where the piece of work is submitted more than five working days after the original deadline (or any formally agreed extension to the deadline): a mark of zero will be recorded.
