Summary module description:

This module will be taught in Summer Term Part 2 (pre-placement) & Autumn Term Part 3.

This module aims to provide the student with an opportunity to: reflect on professional practice while extending the knowledge gained in the first two years of the programme; understand the business context related to the chosen Part 3 specialism; enhance understanding, skills and employability and allow identification of individual strengths, and areas of improvement within the work environment.

This module is delivered at the University of Reading and requires undertaking a work placement of a minimum of 4 weeks / 150 hours.  This could be completed via a remote research project or physically in a workplace.

Aims:

The module aims to provide the student with an opportunity to extend knowledge and learning in their chosen specialisation, apply the knowledge gained in the first two years in a business context, enhance understanding and skills of working in a business environment, and reflect upon issues of relevant professional ethics.

Assessable learning outcomes:

Upon completion of the module, it is expected that the student will be able to:

  • Evaluate their placement role within the organisation, and provide an academic appreciation of the placement;

  • Critically evaluate the observed work in relation to relevant professional codes of practice;

  • Understand how the student’s skills fit into the organisation, and identify the criteria necessary for the student to enhance his/her value to the organisation in the context of graduate recruitment;

  • Exhibit reflective practice and enlightenment for their own continued professional development;

  • Appraise and accurately apply different reflective development practices.

Additional outcomes:

The module also aims to enhance potential employability upon graduation by providing practical experience in full time employment in the market, encouraging development of greater understanding of workplace requirements, understanding of the organisation’s criteria in the context of graduate recruitment processes and procedures, working with others, and the relationship between their academic studies and their application in practice in the market. Confidence, sense of responsibility, team working and communication skills will be enhanced.

Further outcomes include:

  • Recognition and questioning of the role of emotions in shaping events and placing these in context;

  • Examination and appraisal of a range of perspectives;

  • Integration of properly referenced literature.

Outline content:

The area of work undertaken on the placement will be related to the student’s degree discipline, and should provide the opportunity for independent problem solving and team working. Day to day content of the work will be set by the organisation.
