Summary module description:

This module will take place in a practice-based sector specific setting e.g. private sector (big 4 consultancy); public sector (government offices); third sector (charitable organisation). Specialist guest speakers will be invited to present and/or be part of a panel that will engage in dialogue with students about their business challenge projects. The guest panel will offer practice-based advice and guidance recognising that whilst governance and innovation issues may have commonalities, each sector has its unique structures and demands. As each board is unique, students will have an opportunity to share about their business challenge project and gain sector specific guidance/advice. 

Aims:

This module aims to facilitate sector (private; public; third) specific insight to support broader understanding of student's business challenge project. Whilst this module has zero CATS credits, it has significant relevance and weighting towards the qualification

Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of the module it is expected that the student will be able to:

• Explain about the governance challenge issues within the sector (Private, Public, Third sector)

• Consider and refine their business challenge research questions based on guidance and advice from within the sector

• Evaluate their board level business challenge issue in light of the broader unique nature of the sector 

Additional outcomes:

To recognise and draw on sector specific?up to date?practical expertise in support of analysis and synthesis of developing the Business Challenge.? 

Additionally, 

• Critique their business challenge from an outside-in?perspective.? 


• Synthesise theoretical grounding learned in the core modules with the practical sector realities of their business?challenge.? 

Outline content:

This module is 1 full day.  It is designed to facilitate the learning by students through engaging with sector specific practitioners. This enables students to benefit from the practical realities as experienced by other boards and gain insight into the unique issues within their sector (private; public; third sector) by learning in a practice-based setting with a panel of practitioners.  The day will be facilitated by academic staff. Thus students benefit from presence of both practice based and academic advice during the day. 

 

This module is designed to allow for multiple delivery points.  

 

Content:

• Interview dialogue with expert panel


• Business challenge issue roundtable sessions (2)


• Question and answer session with panel

Global context:

Private, Public and Third sector boards international governance contexts and at multi-level. 

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

The module will be facilitated by academic staff and practitioners. The session may include:

• PowerPoint presentations


• Individual exercises 


• Work based and active learning opportunities


• Group exercises combining theory and practice to support facilitated learning


• Problem solving opportunities 

T&L approaches and exercises will cater to individual/diffe rentiation needs and facilitated interactive Q&A as part of scaffolding. Each student will have opportunity to contribute to their own diary as part of the learning experience.

Mandatory written assignment of 2500 words; engagement with class activities; interactive Q&A.
