Summary module description:

This module is specifically aimed at developing student’s project leadership skills. It is delivered by a combination of face-to-face workshops, small group and action learning sets, personal reflection and self-study, The module takes due consideration of the contextual nature of projects and how leadership should be adapted to suit such contexts.



It should be noted that for the purposes of the module, ‘project’ is used as a generic term to include programmes and portfolios.


Aims:

This module aims to:




  • Develop the capability of individuals to plan, manage and reflect on their individual personal leadership development in relation to projects.

  • Encourage development of behavioural skills in individuals to increase the effectiveness and appropriateness of their project leadership

  • Develop an awareness of the specific contextual nature of projects, especially with regard to temporary organisations and the impact this has for leadership.

  • Develop the awareness of the ethical and practical issues in relation to project leadership


Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of the module it is expected that students will be able to:




  • Knowledge of a range of different theoretical models and approaches to learning and leadership development within a project environment.

  • Knowledge of a range of techniques for problem-solving, decision-making and managing feedback within a temporary organisational structure.

  • Critical analysis in order to engage others, assess the project context and decide on the most appropriate leadership interventions.

  • Communication skills, including questioning, listening and managing difference and conflict.



 


Additional outcomes:


  • Understanding how their own personal leadership style can be adapted to a project environment.

  • Understanding the importance and use of distributed leadership forms in a project environment.


Outline content:

The module covers the following topics:




  • The role of the project leader and leadership styles.

  • Project leadership development - self and others.

  • Projects as temporary organisations - implications for practice.

  • Learning and leadership development models and core theories relevant to a project environment.

  • Assessing the context of project leadership.

  • Managing difference and resolvingconflict.

  • Practical project leadership skills development.



 


Global context:

 Consideration is given to project and programme leadership within a global context taking account of different cultures and values.


Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

The module content is delivered through 2 days of taught sessions, supported by key reading from texts and other sources, practical activities for each topic with group and cohort discussion. Guest speakers may be included in order to study contemporary situations. Case material is included to stretch the practical application of theory and experience. An element of self-reflection is included to build awareness and identify development needs. On-line support material is made available v ia Canvas.

Summative assessment- Examinations:

There are no examinations for this module.


Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:

One 5,000 word individual assignment, to be submitted as per the submission schedule for the cohort.



 


Formative assessment methods:

Workshop activities are undertaken to support formative assessment of the learning. These activities are not assessed for the purposes of the final module mark.  This formative assessment takes the form of feedback given to students at workshops on syndicate work, presentations and exercises.


Penalties for late submission:

These are in accordance with the arrangements laid out in the MA Leadership programme handbook.


Assessment requirements for a pass:

The assignment must achieve a minimum mark of 50% to achieve a pass. 



 


Reassessment arrangements:

Reassessment by revision of existing assignment.  One re-submission allowed, capped at 50%.  Timing of resubmission as set out in the MA Leadership programme handbook.
