Online courses reach one million enrolments

Online courses

Our online course programme has reached one million public enrolments!

Raising the University's international profile, our courses are helping students from more than 140 countries learn about a vast range of topics, from mental health and climate change, to ancient Rome, microbes and how to create a mobile game.

In this video, Professor Gavin Brooks, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Pro Vice Chancellor for Teaching and Learning, reflects on the University's Online Course journey, since our first MOOC, Begin Programming, was launched in October 2013. He also thanks the many staff and students who have helped us reach this significant milestone.

How are Online Courses created?

Our dedicated Online Courses team collaborate with academic experts across the University, external experts and prestigious partners to offer a diverse programme of accessible, engaging online courses.

Showcasing our teaching and research excellence, the Programme supports many University objectives including recruitment, widening participation, developing campus-based, blended learning, engaging the local community and CPD. It includes free open online courses available to anyone in the world with an internet connection, and closed courses such as Study Smart and Career Smart, developed exclusively for our campus-based students.

Our innovative Smart courses are designed to help Reading students transition successfully to university, make the most of their time with us and prepare to make the equally important transition into the world of work.
