Immigration advice

Visa information

You will generally need a visa to study in the UK if you are a national of a country outside the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland.

If the course you are applying to is shorter than six months, you can enter on a Short-term study visa. If your course is longer than six months, you will need a Tier 4 (General) visa. More information about student visas can be found on the GOV.UK website.

You can only apply for a visa once you have been offered a place on a course and can meet all other eligibility pre-requisites. It is your responsibility to meet the requirements of your visa and leave the country by the date it specifies.

You can obtain visa advice from your local Embassy or UK High Commission. The UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) also provides a detailed guide on making a Tier 4 application.

Immigration advice service

We provide an on-campus immigration advice service should you need any information or guidance regarding your visa while you are here.

Only 30 minutes from London

Your time studying in the UK wouldn't be complete without a visit to one of the world's most famous capital cities. Fortunately, Reading's close proximity and excellent transport links to London mean that getting there is both easy and simple.

Frequent, direct trains from Reading train station can get you into London Paddington in just half an hour. Major cities such as Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, Bristol and Cardiff are also within reach by train.

Culture and faith

Religious facilities and spiritual care

The University of Reading is a welcoming community for people of all faiths and none. Our Chaplaincy Centre is a central point on campus, providing a good place to go for a quiet coffee and a listening ear.

The Centre offers a signposting service for all the different faiths, with information about places of worship both on campus and in Reading itself. Additionally, there is a Muslim Prayer Centre and Atheist/Humanist/Secularist, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim and Sikh student-run societies on campus.

Feel at home by joining a cultural society

The University is home to many student-run cultural societies, giving you an opportunity to meet people from your home country or region who are also studying at the University. These friendly communities are a great way to meet people who share your cultural identity, or learn about a culture that's different from your own.

We have the following student-run cultural societies:

  • Afro-Caribbean society
  • Asian society
  • Balkan society
  • Chinese society
  • Cypriot and Hellenic society
  • East African society
  • Iraqi society
  • Latin American and Spanish society
  • Lithuanian society
  • Malaysian, Bruneian and Singaporean society
  • Nepalese society
  • Nigerian society
  • Omani society
  • Pakistani society

New societies are created on a regular basis and you can even set up your own society during your time here.

Cultural societies on campus

The University of Reading has a great reputation for their academic courses. The most enjoyable thing is that there are a lot of international students from all over the world, and you can learn about their culture – and they can learn about yours.
