STaR mentors ready to assist new students

STaR mentor programme

425 undergraduate student volunteers from all academic disciplines have been successfully trained as Student Transitions at Reading (STaR) mentors for the 2017/18 academic year.

STaR mentors help new students settle into the University and act as points of contact and support during the first term. From August, they will begin answering questions from new starters joining their own subject areas in September, providing information on key aspects of University life.

They will also meet with new starters during Welcome Week, and will offer themselves as points of contact throughout the autumn term. All new undergraduate part 1 students are automatically partnered with a STaR mentor before they start at Reading.

The partnership has also successfully recruited and trained 21 STaR International mentors – this team is comprised of international and EU Postgraduate Research students, and they will mentor new Postgraduate Taught and Postgraduate Research students from the EU and overseas.

In addition to helping answer course questions before the new term, STaR International mentors provide advice and assistance to postgraduate students moving to the UK.

The STaR Mentor Partnership encourages current students to volunteer themselves as mentors for new starters. Mentors undergo specialist training to equip them with relevant skills and knowledge to help new students ease into the University.

Additional details are available on the STaR Mentor Partnership page. For enquiries, please contact Chantelle Turner.
