Osteoporosis affects approximately 1 in 3 women over the age of 50 years and accounts for more days spent in hospital than diabetes and breast cancer. Recent evidence has suggested that foods that contain natural components with oestrogen like structures (also referred to as phytoestrogens) may be protective against osteoporosis. Flaxseeds are a rich source of these compounds and they are also good sources of essential fatty acids and dietary fibre. A small number of studies have indicated that flaxseeds may have a protective effect on bone health by preventing bone loss but more work is needed to confirm these findings. The main purpose of the present study is to examine the effects of the daily intake of flaxseeds for 12 weeks on biomarkers of bone turnover in postmenopausal women living in the UK.

If the following applies to you, you will be considered for participation in the trial:

Aged 50-75 years, postmenopausal and with a body mass index (BMI) ≥23-35kg/m2. You are generally healthy and have not been diagnosed with heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoporosis or osteopenia, is a non-smoker, not taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT), vitamin D or calcium supplements.
