AbsenceIf you have to be absent from any compulsory classes you should contact your Student Support Co-ordinator to discuss the absence reporting arrangements for your School.
Regular and appropriate attendance has been a University requirement for many years, as outlined in our current Internal Calendar and Statement of Learner Responsibilities.
Monitoring student attendance and engagement is important to support student retention and performance. It also allows the University to fulfil various required and statutory duties.
It is a UK Visa and Immigration (UKVI) requirement that universities monitor the attendance and engagement of visa national students. Persistent failure to comply might put a student’s visa status at risk. Since 2012/13 schools monitor the sessions/coursework that all students would be expected to attend/submit as a normal part of their studies.
Only in very extreme cases of persistent and prolonged absence with no extenuating circumstances present, would a report be submitted to the UKVI.
Some schools have chosen to record attendance/engagement data for all students (home, EU and International) and some Schools at present will only record this data for International students.
The University expects to roll out monitoring the attendance and engagement of all students (home, EU and International) as a requirement across all schools in the medium term.
