Emily found her perfect place at Reading
Emily, from Leicester, didn't achieve the grades needed for her firm or insurance universities. After speaking to the University of Reading during Clearing, she accepted a place on the BA German degree course.
Did you carry out any research ahead of results day?
"As it got closer to results day, I started to think that I hadn't done as well as I had first thought. At that point, I had a quick look at other possible universities."
Who helped you go through Clearing?
"My family were the biggest support, especially when I was, naturally, upset and emotional on results day. It was incredible to have their support when I found out my results, but also to keep me level-headed and help to organise my options during the Clearing process. My A level German teacher was absolutely fantastic when I went to collect my results. She advised me to call my firm and insurance choices and then some other universities, and was available on the phone afterwards. I couldn't have done it without her or my family.
Why did you choose the course you enrolled on?
"I had been to visit the University of Reading on both an Open Day and a Visit Day, and I really loved it. However, I didn't put Reading as my firm or insurance choice due to the minor factor of the distance from home. Therefore, when it came to Clearing, Reading was the natural choice. I'm very pleased that I'd visited the University before, so I knew and loved what I was walking into. The University was my third call after my firm and insurance places and I'm so pleased to have had the opportunity to go to Reading."
How has your time at Reading been, and have you enjoyed your course?
"I've absolutely loved my time at university so far. I am always so grateful that I came to Reading through Clearing and, while that may be a weird thing to hear, it was the best decision I made. I've really made the most out of university and thrown myself into every opportunity, which I may not have done at my firm choice. I love my course and I feel like it's at the right level for me, which also may not have been the case at my firm choice."
What would be your top tip for students in the lead-up to results day?
"Either research or visit universities that could be potential Clearing choices (about four or five choices), even if you don't think you'll need it. For Clearing itself, you may be emotional and feel almost rejected but, honestly, it all pays off in the end and you will have the best experience wherever you go. University is what you make of it, and you will meet amazing friends and experience new things. Try to see the positives in your results: you haven't failed, it's just led you down a new and exciting path. Also, seek out support from friends, family and teachers."
