Taught by expert staff with extensive teaching, research, and consultancy experience, you’ll work collaboratively across a range of topics in pure and applied mathematics.

Exploring economics
Economics skills can help you progress into a range of sectors such as business, finance, government and marketing.
In the Department of Economics, you will be taught by academics who are informing policy decisions by governments, major multinational organisations, and agencies such as the UN and the World Bank, allowing you to gain a thorough understanding of both microeconomics and macroeconomics, with a choice between econometrics or economic theory in your second year.
We pride ourselves in our high-quality teaching, which will be delivered in a range of approaches, including:

This degree includes an integrated, year-long, paid industrial placement between your second and final year.
We offer a variety of placements in areas such as finance, logistics, and technology, and across a range of national and international organisations, such as Microsoft, IBM, SAP and the NHS.
Our dedicated placements officer can provide advice and support to find your ideal placement, as well as developing your CV and interview skills.
You can also undertake summer placements throughout your degree if you wish too.

Shaping your degree in BSc Mathematics and Economics
In the final year of your degree, you will be able to explore areas of interest in greater depth.
Alongside mathematics and/or statistics project work, you will choose from a range of optional modules, covering topics such as: international economics, macroeconomic policy and dynamic systems.

The Department of Economics will support your learning in several ways:
- Economics Surgeries offer one-to-one appointments with staff allowing you to discuss the topics you've studied and get help with specific study skills.
- Economics Conversations provide the opportunity for you to discuss an economic issue in the news with staff and other students from across the department in a relaxed, informal setting.
- The Economics Society is a student-led body that you can get involved in. It arranges social events for students, careers-focused events as well as lectures and discussions with economists on a range of topical matters, such as the economics of health and feminism.
