University Black History Month events

The University will be hosting a number of events throughout Black History Month (1-31 October 2018).
Whiteliness and Institutional Racism: Hiding Behind Unconscious Bias – Termly Diversity Seminar Autumn 2018
Professor Shirley Anne Tate, Leeds Beckett University
Wednesday 10th October, 2 pm, Nike Lecture Theatre Agriculture.
Shirley Anne Tate is Professor of Race and Education in the Carnegie School of Education, Leeds Beckett University, UK and Honorary Professor, Chair in Critical Studies in Higher Education Transformation (CriSHET) at Nelson Mandela University, South Africa. Her area of research is Black diaspora studies broadly and her research interests are institutional racism, the body, affect, beauty, 'race' performativity and Caribbean decolonial studies while paying attention to the intersections of 'race' and gender.
BlacKkKlansman – Spike Lee USA 2018 – Directed by Spike Lee with Adam Driver, Topher Grace, Alec Baldwin – 135 min Thursday 11th October 7.45-10.15pm Palmer Building
From visionary filmmaker Spike Lee comes the incredible true story of Ron Stallworth. Ron, played by John David Washington, was the first African-American detective to serve in the Colorado Springs Police Department. Determined to make a name for himself, Stallworth bravely sets out on a dangerous mission: infiltrate and expose the Ku Klux Klan. Stallworth dupes them on the phone and when a physical meeting was required sends along a white colleague (Adam Driver) to stand in for him.

Black History Month Cross Campus Exhibition
Throughout October, we will be celebrating the contribution of people of colour to different disciplines. Keep your eyes open for this RUSU and University partnership at various locations across campus including the Schools of Law and Mathematical, Physical and Computational Science.
As well as these events, there will also be a number of student-led activities, including events by FemSoc and the Islamic Society.
