Aurora Women's Leadership Development Programme

There is still time to apply for the Aurora Women's Leadership Development programme, a popular development programme for women in higher education. 

Funding is available for up to 10 members of staff to enrol on the programme, which has been specially designed to encourage women in higher education to think of themselves as leaders and to develop leadership skills. 

It is aimed at females in roles up to and including Associate Professor or Professional and Managerial Grade 8, and is ideal for individuals with managerial experience looking to move further into leadership in the future.

The programme combines various approaches to learning and development for a more well-rounded experience – participants will take part in conference and networking events and will be mentored by a senior member of University staff. Each participant will also be given access to a wide range of online resources to help focus on their intended goal.    

Core principals include:

  • Understanding organisations and the sector
  • Developing leadership behaviours, skills and knowledge
  • Identifying and overcoming barriers and obstacles
  • Growing confidence and a leadership identity
  • Building networks, coalitions, and support processes

The programme is divided into five key themes – participants must be able to attend one session per theme (see table below). The Power and Politics and Action Learning modules should be undertaken in the same location – it is possible to complete all other sessions in different locations, if desired.

Up to 10 places will be funded centrally, with the request that the School / Function covers the cost of travel to the sessions listed in the table above.  

To apply, please send to Susan Thornton the following:


  • A short statement (maximum 1 page) explaining the skills and knowledge you hope to gain through the programme; your leadership aspirations for the future and why you believe this programme will help you achieve them; and how you anticipate to apply your learning from the programme.
  • Confirmation you can commit to attending the five themed sessions, identifying the location and dates you can attend.
  • A supporting statement from your line manager, which should include a commentary on your commitment to development and the support that you will be provided by your School / Function / Service.


Applications must be received by midday, Friday 14 July 2017. 

Your Head of School / Function must be in agreement with the application. Successful applicants will be notified by Friday 1 September.
