Using Word for a Thesis

Aims

This course is split into two 2-hour sessions, the first part dealing with matters of importance when starting a thesis (e.g. creating a special thesis template, typing the content), and the second when finishing a thesis (e.g. controlling the layout, final steps such as a table of contents and title page). Both sessions look at how to make the best use of Microsoft Word when writing a thesis (or other long document).

Objectives

By the end of the starting a thesis session, participants should be able to:

  • Set up a document to comply with the Rules for the Submission of Theses
  • Create a template to include special styles, section numbering, headers/footers
  • Use the template for new chapters
  • Add styles to the template from documents
  • Add graphics and use captions (for these and tables, equations etc)
  • Use EndNote to add and maintain a bibliography
  • Do a Word Count

By the end of the finishing a thesis session, participants should be able to:

  •  Control the layout on the pages
  •  Create sections and control the headers/footers
  •  Control table layout
  •  Control footnote placing
  •  Create a Master Document
  •  Insert Tables of Contents, Figures etc and a list of References
  •  Create a Title Page

Format

Two 2 hour hands-on sessions using example files, with further demonstration via overhead projection, on a PC.
