Short URLs or aliases
URLs are composed of three elements: the form of the information (e.g. http, ftp, gopher), the site address (e.g. www.reading.ac.uk) and the path to the files within the directory structure of the server (e.g. /AcaDepts/aa/Agri/info/atagalt.htm). Put together, the URL for a page might be http://www.reading.ac.uk/AcaDepts/aa/Agri/info/atagalt.html
When requested via its-help@reading.ac.uk, IT Services can provide a link so that the Department has a short Uniform Resource Locator (URL), e.g http://www.reading.ac.uk/agri . This form of URL conforms to the Branding guidelines.
All files should have public read access and all directories public execute access which can be set using
chmod a+x filename.
