Microsoft FrontPage 2000/2002/2003 facilities offered on the Microsoft Windows WWW server

Introduction

Microsoft FrontPage 2000/2002/2003(FP) requires some special extensions installed on the WWW server to be able to work. IT Services have installed a Microsoft IIS Web server which includes the Microsoft FrontPage Extensionsto give some of the extra functionality, e.g. the ability to create, access, update and search databases from the WWW.

If you need to access any of the special features of FP including access to database or using ASP functionality then the site should be moved on to our Microsoft Windows 2000 Web server. If your site does not require any of the FP features, you should continue to put your web files on the Unix web server.(further information can be found on the WWW in Publishing on the World Wide Web.)

Any existing Information Provider can apply for a username on the Microsoft (IIS) Web server.

To request the an account for the Microsoft server there are 2 steps:

Synchronize your password on the unix machine main

Before we can create the account for you, you need to synchronize your WWW username and password with the Microsoft server. There is a facility on main to enable you to do this easily using a Microsoft Windows computer as follows

  1. Click on [Start]
  2. Click on Run
  3. In the box that appears, type: telnet main <Enter>
  4. Click on [OK]
  5. Log in with your WWW username and password
  6. At the main% prompt type: syncpwd <Enter>
  7. When prompted, type in your WWW username followed by <Enter>
  8. When prompted, type in your WWW password followed by <Enter>
  9. You should see a message Password synchronisation succeeded
  10. Finally type:exit <Enter>
  11. Close the telnet window.

Request a Microsoft Web server account

Send an email to its-help@reading.ac.uk, please include the following

Your personal username

Your WWW username

A line explaining that you wish an account to be created on the Microsoft Server

Conformation that your password has been synchronized

A suggested name for the directory, if this is not included we would create the directory with the same name as the username

We will send you an email when the account has been created, the username and password for the new account would be the same as for the old WWW account.

Microsoft Access Database fix

If you have access databases on your sub web then they may not initially work (a known/documented bug from Microsoft). There is a solution which follows:

  1. Open FrontPage 2000
  2. From the File menu, select open Web
  3. Type in the location e.g., http://www.fp.rdg.ac.uk/web_username/
  4. Click [Open]

Now for each page accessing the database:

  1. Open the web page accessing the database
  2. From the Tools menu, select Web Settings
  3. Click on Database tab
  4. Highlight your database name in list
  5. Click [Verify]
  6. Click [Apply]
  7. Click [OK]
  8. Save and close document.
