The purpose of this document is to provide users with a guide to be able to remotely access University systems securely using Multi Factor Authentication (MFA). This solution is intended to create a more flexible and responsive working environment by providing wider access to protected IT systems and ensuring better security.

The scope of this document is to provide a user guide on how end users can enrol their devices with the University's Multi Factor Authentication Service and subsequently access protected systems remotely from their home devices (PCs or tablets). The systems currently in scope to be accessed through this service are Agresso, SITS and Trent. You will only be able to access the systems you are currently authorised to use.

The target audience of this document are University of Reading members of staff who are authorised and registered to access protected IT systems remotely. Remote systems access is a restricted service only available to registered users. To register for this service please contact your Head of Department for approval.

a. A PC, laptop or tablet - This is required for a one time registration that will set you up to remotely access protected systems. This device must be connected to the University of Reading campus cable network or to the University's eduroam Wi-Fi network using a staff account.

b. A mobile device or tablet - This is the device you will use for second authentication any time you want to access protected systems. You MUST protect this device by making sure that it is password or PIN locked to prevent unauthorised use. If your device is lost or stolen please notify the IT service desk immediately.

c. A remote PC, laptop or tablet - This is any device you may wish to use remotely to access protected systems (e.g. home PC, laptop or tablet).
