FSA LA Letter (PLGEN22047), 11 August 2022
Summary: The FSA has published its first outcomes on consultations. Future outcomes will be included on the ‘outcomes on novel food consultations’ webpage.
Local authorities (LAs) will wish to be aware that that the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has published a webpage on the outcomes of novel food consultations. The novel foods Article 4 consultation request is available to businesses who are unsure of the novel food status of their product(s) and have evidenced a significant history of consumption of the food in the UK or European Union (EU) prior to May 1997.
Retained (EU) Regulation 2018/456 details the information the FSA/FSS requires to make the decision on the novel food status of the food. If the conclusion of the process is that the food is novel, then businesses will need to apply for authorisation to market the product legally in Great Britain (GB).
The FSA has published the first FSA/FSS statements on foods that have completed the Article 4 consultation process. The table within the outcomes of novel food consultationsweb page will be updated with future FSA/FSS outcomes that are completed.
