WINE - Commission consultation: Protected designations of origin and geographical indications, traditional terms and labelling of wine

The Commission is consulting on a draft delegated regulation on various issues connected to the labelling of wines. The following is the first part of the Introductory memorandum. The consultation closes on the 12 June 2018.

Regulation (EU) No 1308/2013 of the European Parliament and of the Council establishes a Union framework for protected designations of origin, protected geographical indications and traditional terms for grapevine products and sets out a system for their registration at the Union's level. Moreover, in order to ensure the smooth functioning of the internal market, Regulation (EU) No 1308/2013 provides for Union rules on labelling and presentation of products of the wine sector.

Regulation (EU) No 1308/2013 empowers the Commission to adopt delegated and implementing acts setting out the procedures for the registration of protected designations of origin, protected geographical indications and traditional terms for grapevine products and establishing the conditions for the use of certain compulsory and optional labelling particulars for grapevine products.

The purpose of this delegated act is therefore to supplement Regulation (EU) No 1308/2013 as regards the procedures to be followed for the registration of new use protected designations of origin, protected geographical indications and traditional terms and those related to their amendment or cancellation. It also established detailed conditions for the use of compulsory labelling particulars such, among others, the actual alcoholic strength, provenance, bottler, producer or importer and voluntary labelling particulars such
